Used Hummers: Military, Army, H1 And H2

For those interested in owning their own Hummer, the price tags on new Hummers is a heavy one. Stripped down versions of new Hummers cost well over $125,000 for the first generation, over $60,000 for the second generation and over $30,000 for the third generation; difficult purchases to justify. Considering that the fun in owning a Hummer is in the vehicles capabilities and in some cases luxury, the stripped down versions just don't cut it.

A viable option for an aspiring Humvee owner on a Jeep budget is one of the many used Hummers gracing the parking lots of auto dealerships. The H1, because of its popularity and looming threats of its discontinuation, can be very difficult to find used.

The H2, however, is another story. Especially because of gas mileage concerns, the second generation Humvee can be found in abundance. The SUV version is most common and ranges in price from $27,000 to $43,000. Difficult to find, the SUT (sport utility truck) trim of the Hummer usually isn't found in as high a number as other used Hummers.

Many different factors influence the cost of used Hummers. Option and trim packages play a role, but mileage is also a concern. Lower priced used Hummers usually have quite a few more miles than the more expensive ones. Generally, the more miles a vehicle has, the more repair and maintenance costs pile up. The models with few miles are usually showroom or dealer cars with fewer miles and usually fewer problems. This of course can pose a problem as the vehicle tends to cost more.

For the select few that find a domesticated General Motors Hummer won't do. For those that want the real thing–the US Armed Forces M998 \ High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle–rest assured. Used military Hummers can be found for sale if looked for in the right places. These (truly) battle tested versions come in the two passenger M998 Cargo/ Troop Carrier and the four passenger M10398 Cargo/ Troop Carrier. Hard- core Humvee enthusiasts can be sure their purchase includes the Army seal of approval on the HMMWV capabilities.

Most used Hummers from the military can be found with as few as 5,000 to 10,000 miles, and 12,500 on average. Yet they are still more than capable of handling the up to 31 degree grades and side slopes of up to 22 degrees that made them famous. Prices for used military hummers range from $28,000 to $37,750.

The downside of owning a used military Hummer instead of domesticated used Hummers is most military Hummers lack elegant option packages. The majority of military Hummers are available in desert camouflage or green camouflage and not equipped with stereo or comfortable seats. Of course bullet holes and blast damage are usually thrown in free of charge.
