It seems as though all motor vehicles on the road today look alike. That does not mean they all are alike, but it sometimes is easy to mistake a Nissan for a Honda. However, motorists never confuse a Humvee with any other vehicle—not even another sport-utility vehicle.
There are two basic divisions of Humvees: military and civilian. One is issued for military use only and the other is the common marketplace model issued to the general public.
What immediately sets the military-issue Humvee apart is that it is the only known vehicle with its own mission statement: "Provide a common light tactical vehicle capacity." But that's not all...
The military Humvee was instated in 1985 and actually is called an HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle). And "multipurposeful" it is. The military Humvee may be used as a "troop carrier, armament carrier, S250 shelter carrier, ambulance, TOW missile [or] a Scout vehicle." In other words, this is the optimal transport vehicle for the military. Also, there are 11 more variations of these
configurations. The military Humvee is used to do the heavy work.
And heavy work is commendable for such a lightly structured Humvee. The military Humvee is modeled after the M988 military Jeep chassis, which is sturdy but lightweight to provide less load carriage. The military Humvee itself "is...diesel-powered, [has] four-wheel-drive...with an automatic transmission." It combines military power with easy manageability.
But the Humvee can be used beyond service. The Hummer, which is the commercial version of the military Humvee, comes in four different models with four different accessory packages: H1, an HMMWV version, H2, and, the latest, H3.
First issued to the public in 1992, the Humvee (Hummer) underwent a metamorphosis through the years. There have been too many revisions to the exterior, mechanical and interior design to recount, but the engine has mostly remained the same—large! The 6.5L diesel engine is still a popular preference amongst Humvee owners.
Luxury with sport is the fashion behind civilian Humvees. They come in a variety of high-gloss colors with accessories rivaling most foreign luxury cars. However, the number of accessories decreases in the hierarchy of models because baser model accessories become standard in high-end models.
An interesting distinction and commonality between the extravagant civilian Humvee and its rustic forefather are the companies behind the vehicles. Both types are products of AM General (formerly American Motors) in South Bend, Ind., but the military Humvee gets its armor and armory from O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt in Fairfield, Ohio. O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt also customize armor/armory for civilian vehicles; so, if one wishes, a civilian Humvee may be upgraded with armor/armory.
Military service or a weekend getaway, the Humvee is formidably distinguished from all other vehicles. It needs no introduction. Its largeness is enough.
