Hummer H1: Gas Mileage, Soft Top, Custom Wheels And Accessories

The true baptism by fire for the Hummer H1 came in the spring of 1990 during the London to Peking Motor Challenge, just months before the modern Humvee's premier battle-test, as the transport of choice for Coalition Forces during the Gulf War.

Early prototypes of the Humvee saw action in 1989 during Operation Just Cause, the United States’ invasion of Panama. The prototypes were near final production models, but the fruits of labor and design had begun nearly two decades earlier.

The M998 HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle), or Humvee, and the for-civilian Hummer, or Hummer H1, share many visceral traits, including the same drive-train, suspension, frame and body, but options like the fittings for MK19 grenade launcher, M2 heavy machine gun or the advanced weapons system C.R.O.W.S. are only featured on the military version.

In exchange, civilian models feature more comfortable seats, stereo and air-conditioning standard (which have only recently appeared in the military version). In addition to creature comforts, the Hummer H1 features trim packages, including soft top, four-door hard top pickup and wagon body as well as two-door pickup and four-door slant back models.

In addition to different trims, the Hummer H1 features different engine configurations including a 6.2L Detroit Diesel V8/ GM TH400/ 3L80 3-speed, a 6.5 L Detroit Diesel V8/ GM 4L80-E 4-speed, a 5.7L Vortec 5700 gasoline v8 TBI/GM 4L80-E 4-speed, a 6.5L turbo Detroit Diesel V8/ GM 4L80-E 4-speed and for its 2006 model line a 6.6L turbo Duramax LLY turbo Diesel/ Allison 1000 5-speed.

Proponents of conservation have criticized the Hummer H1 over pollution concerns, a valid point considering the Hummer H1 is one of the largest vehicles and second to least efficient vehicles on the American market with a combined MPG of 17 compared to the comparably equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee's combined MPG of 13. Issues of poor gas mileage have coalesced into legislation for stricter emission requirements, leading to speculation that the Hummer H1 will no longer be produced for the civilian market after 2006. The HMMWV responsible for spawning the Hummer H1 has, in turn, spawned the Hummer H2 and Hummer H3, smaller and somewhat more gas mileage-concerned offspring.

Despite fuel consumption and emissions concerns, the Hummer H1 continues to be a favorite of both owner and non-owner enthusiasts. Part of the Hummer H1's appeal is that nearly no two are alike. The versatility of the Humvee in the military is shared characteristic of the domesticated version. The flexibility of a Humvee in the military to be modified from an ambulance to an armored armament carrier capable of traversing hot deserts to muddy swamps to heavy snows is noted in the civilian version.

Hummer H1 drivers have modified their rides into luxury vehicles featuring high-end entertainment equipment, custom wheels and accessories while more adventurous owners have sought top-of-the-line performance parts, like snorkel kits to improve the vehicle’s amphibious capabilities.

Admirable to note, H1 owners who have improved the performance aspects of their vehicle have started an organization to aid in disaster situations. Known as HOPE (Hummer Owners Prepared for Emergencies), the group was organized in conjunction with the The Hummer Club, Inc., and the American Red Cross to assist people in events such as Hurricane Katrina.
