Hummers are popular cars to modify. Inspired not only by the inherent flexibility of the gas guzzling utility vehicle, but by the video games and model cars that have featured the military vehicle, a classic case of "does art imitate life" or vice versa.
The hummer was designed as a light transport vehicle to replace another "tactical to practical" vehicle, the Jeep. The HMMWV was designed to replace the quarter-ton jeep, the M718A1and m792 ambulance, the half-ton mule, and the 1.25 Gamma Goat. The hummer came to encompass a variety of roles in its military capacity. Using kits, much like the after-market kits available for domestic cars, the HMMWV could be fitted as a transport for troops and weapons, a shelter Carrier and ambulance.
The first Hummers manufactured for public consumption were built on the same assembly lines as their tactical counterparts.. The military Hummer and the civilian Hummer parts company just before those intended for military service are equipped with armament fittings. Much like the military's HMMWV, the domesticated Hummer and its offspring have become popular for modification. Auto shops have become artisans, their medium of choice the Hummer. Performance Hummer parts and ancillary accessories were designed and produced to upgrade and customize nearly every aspect of the Hummer. H1 enthusiasts have long sought performance upgrades to the more than adequate vehicle.
Of course, the stock Hummer comes built with Hummer parts and accessories to the hilt.
The Hummer H1 Alpha features over forty factory options and upgrades. Some of the options include an Advantage Package. The Adventure Package offers front and rear-locking Eaton Electronic ELockers, 17 inch forged aluminum wheels with dual beadlocks and runflats as well as a 12,000 lb winch and puncture resistant off-road tires. Exterior options include a removable tubular side step and utility step for accessing the roof, engine compartment or windshields, flared fenders to protect the finish from abuse from mud, salt and other debris and the option of a tailgate or bed mounted spare tire carrier. Other Hummer accessories include a wrap around brushguard and steel rocker panel to protect the exterior as well as center close-out panel and bumper close out panel to keep the elements from the interior. In addition to optional light bars and off-road HID lights, the Hummer offers an infrared night vision HUD in case the full array of lights miss anything.
The H2 standard SUV and SUT (sports utility truck) and the H3 and H3x come in three trim packages: the standard model, the Adventure Series and the Lux Series. They feature upgraded Hummer parts and accessories, but nowhere near the exhaustive list of their inspiration. Hummer parts like off-road in mind suspensions and brush guards are part of the Adventure Series on both model lines. For those desiring comfortable surroundings and the safety of paved roads over the great outdoors, the Hummer Lux Series offers softer features. Optional Hummer parts like heated leather seats, six disc changers and Monsoon sound systems are just some of the luxuries of the Lux Series.
